PROJECT NOTES:
I’m just looking to do something a little different! This is based on a sketch I did on my iPad. Yellow is a rough color to work with so the sky is going to need some work

Session 1
I did a very quick and simple sketch on the canvas, and then a basic underpainting (with a color that I can’t recall).

Session 1
I started with a light orange sky and have just begun to build up the clouds. I’m really just defining the shapes and putting down a base color. I will mix up the red color of the Red Planet surface as I go along. The clouds need a lot of work, so that is my focus right now.

Session 2
I’ve continued to work on the clouds – mostly just building up the shapes. I will create more depth once I start shading the dark areas of the clouds. I’m mostly using titanium white with just a dab of cadmium yellow for the clouds. I will use shades of purple for the shadows. (FYI – purple is opposite yellow on the color wheel).

Session 3
I’ve got the majority of the clouds done. I used some red in the clouds down near the ground to simulate a sandstorm. I also painted the large rock that is the focal point.
I’ll have some more highlighting to do once I start filling in the foreground, but for now this begins to set the mood I’m going for. Time to start on the foreground next.
